NCCU in Connection
歡迎來到「政在連結中」創新國際連結USR計畫期末課程展覽!
本次展覽的30組學生作品,來自「故事如何塑造法律」、「永續發展與地方創生」、「人文地理」、「全球議題在亞洲」以及「移民與全球化」等課程。來自世界各地的國際學生與台灣學生,透過這些課程深入認識並觀察台灣社會的各個面向與永續發展議題。學生們藉由走訪、拍攝、訪談、戲劇演繹、五感體驗等多元形式,探索在地與全球的連結,並從微小行動中孕育出改變的契機。同時,創新國際連結USR計畫更與桃園的移工庇護中心、萬華的地方創生組織,以及土城的少年觀護所等社會實踐場域攜手合作。邀請您加入「政」在連結中的人與社群,一起見證大學如何成為跨文化共學與實踐行動的交匯點。

​Welcome to the “NCCU in Connection” Exhibition!
The 30 student projects you see here come from courses including Law and Storytelling, Sustainable Development and Regional Revitalization, Human Geography, Global Issues in Asia, and Migration and Globalization. Through these courses, students from Taiwan around the world have come together to explore and understand the diverse facets of Taiwanese society and sustainability issues. By engaging in field visits, photography, interviews, theatrical performances, and sensory experiences, they explore the connections between local and global issues, finding seeds of change through small but significant actions. The Inclusive Innovation USR Project also collaborates with social practice sites such as the migrant shelters in Taoyuan, local revitalization organizations in Wanhua, and the women’s juvenile detention center in Tucheng. We invite you to join us in this journey of connection and practice, and to see how the university becomes a hub for intercultural learning and social engagement.

CELEBRAITNG “mga ugat” [“mga ugat” = roots (Tagalog)]

內容簡介Brief introduction of your project:
CELEBRATING “mga ugat” is a project born from direct engagement with Filipino migrants in Taiwan –first through an activity at the asylum centre in Taoyuan (SPA Foundation), and later through a personal interview with Imelda Chen, the heart of our exhibition and the founder of Cres-Art. 
Building on insights gained through the Migration and Globalisation course and our own research, we identified three key themes in the Filipino migrant experience: home-making, food as cultural identity, and migrant women as cultural anchors –presented in our main poster.
The project also explores the link between gardening and migration, focusing on how the culinary traditions are preserved by cultivating essential plants and ingredients in Taiwan.
Additionally, we invited exhibition visitors to experience these stories and messages through all their senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch.

Where is food, there is home — International students' story in Taiwan

內容簡介Brief introduction of your project:
We would introduce 2 Thai students' story in NCCU. One of them is a junior student, the other one is an exchange student. We'll mainly talk about the difficulties they both face in Taiwan. It could be the language barriers as we would usually point out, the culture differences, and of course our topic: Food unaccustomedness.
 
As a local student, we might often neglect the difficulties that international student are currently facing while studying and living in a different environment. With our booth, we can strengthen the relationship and enhance the bond between local and international student by introducing both of our interviewees' opinion toward the issues of life in Taiwan, and this will let more and more individuals to value in this situations.
 
As we interview both degree student and exchange student, we  can compare different types of obstacles each of them face. We believe that through our introduction this way, we can let local students know more about international students so that we can know how to help them in the future. We hope to identify the barriers international students face except for language.
 
We'll also make a special Thai dessert (egg custard in pumpkin, in Thai: สังขยาฟักทอง) to promote Thailand on our booth

Scent and Smell – Food Memories as a Whole

This project explores the deep connection between scent, memory, and identity through the lens of food and spices. By collecting personal stories from both local Taiwanese and immigrants, we uncover how the smells of foods, especially those tied to cooking, raise powerful emotions, cultural ties, and life experiences. Through interviews and interactive presentation, the project highlights how scent becomes a shared language that bridges differences, triggers nostalgia, and reveals the intimate links regardless of nationality between migration, belonging, childhood and love.

Cultural Mosaic-Bridging Cultures Through Flavors and Stories

內容簡介Brief introduction of your project:
Our group is very diverse, consisting of team members from Hungary, Japan and Taiwan. For our midterm project, we had an interview with an exchange teacher from Turkiye. From this combination, we realized that Taiwanese and Japanese people tend to have relatively limited knowledge about Turkiye and Hungary, while Hungarian and Turkish people often have little knowledge about Taiwan, and hold somewhat superficial ideas about Japan. Therefore, we would like to introduce these four countries through the cuisines from Hungary and invite people to try innovative dishes we have come up with using ingredients that are well-known in Taiwan, Japan and Turkiye. Moreover, visitors can also learn about the historical and cultural backgrounds, as well as the migration patterns associated with the ingredients and cuisines of these regions.

Kuih-rious Tastes: Old vs Bold

We heard from our Malaysian classmates that Kuih-rious has different types in Taiwan which isn’t the traditional one in Malaysia so we had a competition between the creative one and traditional one for others to vote which is their favorite type.

Not Quite the Same:Stories of Adjusted Recipes

內容簡介Brief introduction of your project:
We want to recreate “failing dishes” that struggled due to ingredient shortages or cultural differences, revealing the daily cultural adaptations and challenges that immigrants face. Through collecting these stories, we hope to raise awareness that immigration is not just about economic contributions, but also about the often overlooked impacts on local society.
 
For example, the demand for foreign food can significantly reshape Taiwan’s market distribution and economic activities. The lack of original ingredients can also contribute to innovation and fusion in local cuisine. This is extremely important and we want to emphasize it because when a new ingredient enters the market or when an immigrant restaurant opens, it doesn’t simply introduce a temporary novelty. It has the potential to fundamentally reshape the eating habits — and the health of an entire community for decades.  They are not just trends, yet they slowly and deeply merge into society, influencing how people live, eat, and understand themselves over the long term.

People & Paths: Movement Patterns in NCCU Neighborhood

This study examines the overlooked yet essential role of informal alleyways in shaping the everyday experiences of students at National Chengchi University (NCCU). Focusing on three prominent alleys near Section 2 of Zhinan Road—Ruin Alley, Leftover Street, and the Shortcut to Dah Hsian Library—the research explores how these paths transcend their function as mere shortcuts and become meaningful spaces embedded in the campus’s social and spatial fabric. Drawing on concepts from human geography, such as sense of place and place attachment, and informed by qualitative interviews with NCCU students, the study reveals how routine use, emotional connection, and human–environment interaction transform these alleyways into sites of memory, identity, and community. The findings highlight the vulnerability of such spaces amid ongoing urban development, particularly with the construction of the MRT and proposed urban renewal projects that threaten their existence. The paper argues for the importance of inclusive and sensitive planning that recognizes the social and emotional value of informal pathways, emphasizing that preserving and enhancing these spaces is vital not only for campus mobility but also for sustaining a sense of belonging and continuity in student life

Shared Lives: Student Cohabitation in HuaNan Village

內容簡介Brief introduction of your project:
This report explores the transformation of Huanan Village at National Chengchi University (NCCU) from a faculty dormitory into a student co-living space. Using qualitative methods such as interviews with current residents and field observations, the study compares the experiences of students living in Huanan Village with those in traditional school dormitories. The findings suggest that Huanan Village’s self-organized, group-based living arrangements foster a stronger sense of community, improved shared space management, and fewer conflicts over communal facilities like bathrooms and refrigerators. The report also discusses the role of intentional community and resident self-management in creating a more harmonious living environment. Drawing on theories from human geography and previous research on dormitory life, the study highlights how adaptive reuse and student empowerment can enhance both the quality of student housing and the preservation of cultural heritage. Overall, the experience of Huanan Village suggests that giving students more responsibility and choice in their living arrangements can improve both the quality of student life and the preservation of campus culture.

From Ashes to Art: Songshan Cultural and Creative Park

內容簡介Brief introduction of your project:
This study investigates how visitors' views of Taipei's space, history, and urban development have changed as a result of Songshan Tobacco Factory's conversion into a cultural and creative park. The factory, which was once a representation of Taiwan's industrial economy, has been transformed into a creative and recreational destination that draws tourists from both domestic and foreign countries. Tourism geography is the study of tourism as a social and cultural activity as well as an industry. The social, cultural, and environmental effects of tourism on the location and the local community are also examined in this study, along with the spatial movement of visitors to this destination. This project offers a forum for considering how tourist areas are intended, used, and appreciated in modern cities, making it more than just a case study of urban renewal. The study adds to larger conversations about placemaking, identity, and the influence of creative industries on urban tourism by documenting the complex reactions of stakeholders. Finally, it aims to show how renewed heritage sites can change visitors' perspectives while also promoting important discussions about social and cultural sustainability in Taipei's urban environment.

Reduce Smoking Behavior around Wanxing Elementary School

內容簡介Brief introduction of your project:
This report outlines a design-based proposal to help reduce smoking behavior around Wanxing Elementary School in Taipei. During our fieldwork, we noticed that even though the area is meant for children, many adults were regularly smoking and socializing near the school’s main entrance. This observation aligns with existing research highlighting the high visibility of smoking in urban Taiwanese environments, particularly in places where enforcement is low and cultural norms are permissive (Chang & Lee, 2021). This creates concerns about air quality and the kind of behavior being modeled for students.
 
Instead of strict enforcement, our proposal takes a softer, more respectful approach to encourage people to refrain from smoking in this sensitive area. We suggest simple changes such as installing signs, adding footpath markings, establishing a designated smoking zone farther from the entrance, and involving the community to make the environment around the school more child-friendly.​

Small but Impactful - Design Changes to Liwen Bookstore

內容簡介Brief introduction of your project:
This project investigates and addresses spatial and functional challenges at Liwen Bookstore (麗文書局) on the campus of National Chengchi University (NCCU). Drawing on human geography fieldwork, the study identifies key issues including limited accessibility for physically challenged individuals, inefficient product displays, and a lack of inclusivity in both language and layout. Employing a design-based approach, the project proposes interventions such as spatial reorganization, clearer signage, and accessibility enhancements through barrier-free physical design and digital upgrades to the Liwen App. Special emphasis is placed on revitalizing specific sections—such as the manga area—to attract customer attention, enhance the browsing experience, and boost sales. The target users include NCCU students, international visitors, and elderly patrons. Guided by the interplay between agency and structure, the project seeks to reconfigure both the physical and symbolic organization of the space, including the territorialization of underrepresented genres and the development of more intuitive layouts and digital supports. Ultimately, these solutions aim to improve user experience, support staff efficiency, and foster a more inclusive and welcoming bookstore environment.

A Story of 阿虎(A-hu)

內容簡介Brief introduction of your project:
Our project is a comic about the Taiwan leopard cat. 阿虎 is a nickname we gave to the cat in the story. The story is about a leopard cat hunting a rat and being hit by a car. In the end of the story, although the cat unfortunately passed away, he met his grandpa in another world and looked at the place they had lived together. We want to make a story about the leopard cat because we first saw a TikTok reel about the bodies of North American coyotes lying on the road, which made us feel that some animals are being ignored. Then, I thought of the Taiwan leopard cats. Although their issues have received more attention recently, the situation of leopard cats is still harsh, and they are now endangered. Therefore, we drew a story about the leopard cat roadkill issue.

The Peace Makers

We use a question-and-answer style board game to introduce players to the practices of restorative justice among Indigenous peoples in Taiwan, Norway, Bolivia, and Canada. Through exploring the reconciliation ceremonies and historical interactions between Indigenous communities and state authorities in these countries, we found that their processes embody the pursuit of truth, healing of trauma, and restoration of broken relationships. By telling the stories of the Atayal people of Taiwan, the Sámi people of Norway, the Anishinaabe people of Canada, and the peasant worker organizations of Bolivia, we aim to help players understand the diverse forms of Indigenous restorative justice.

Muted Rhapsody— a love song to our mother tongue

The history of Taiwan during the martial law and implementation of the National Language Movement (國語運動) in the past has contributed to the loss of mother tongues and generational barriers. We created a music video with Taiwanese Hokkien and illustrated a story with butterflies as a symbolism of ‘mother tongues’ and the ability to share our language and culture. This topic is significant to us deeply on a personal level and we want this project to act as a preservation of mother tongues in the context of Transitional Justice and motivate people to reconnect with their mother tongues and cultures.

This project aims to bring the stories of migrants, which are often confined to official documents and legal texts, into a more vivid and human form. Focusing on well-founded fear of being persecuted — race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion — the exhibition invites participants to engage in short, interactive role plays that reflect the lived experiences of migrants. Participants can choose a scenario by referring to six posters, each presenting a different story. Through these role plays, they step into the position of a migrant and experience the emotions and challenges involved in legal processes such as asylum interviews and immigration screenings.

Instead of presenting the law as a neutral and objective system, these role plays reveal how migrants are shaped, restricted, or silenced by it. While legal systems are often justified through arguments about national security, identity, or humanitarian values, this project uncovers the hidden struggles and personal acts of resistance behind such narratives. The goal is to humanize the legal experiences of migrants and encourage the audience to view immigration law and policy through a more empathetic lens.

Wanhua can become not just a tourist destination, but a resilient, community-driven space where tradition and sustainability meet.

內容簡介Brief introduction of your project:Wanhua District (萬華區), known as Bangka during the Qing dynasty is one of the oldest areas in Taipei. It used to be a busy place full of temples, markets, and shops. Today, many stores have closed, and the area is not as lively as before. Still, Wanhua is known for its culture and history, with places like Longshan Temple bringing in visitors. But compared to modern areas like Xinyi, Wanhua has fewer new businesses, less money coming in, and an older population.

Protecting iconic sites like Longshan Temple means preserving the unique identity of an entire neighborhood.

內容簡介Brief introduction of your project:We want to share genuine black people's stories putting the light on how one can live their experience differently.This is a subject that really matters to us as we are racialised people in our home societies (France/and Senegal for Maty). As for Maty, he is considered as black in France, but white in Senegal. As for Lily-Rose, she is seen as asian. Our experiences are shaped by racism, especially in a society that considers itself colour-blind. We want to show how much this subject matters, and highlight discriminations, whether they are considered as 'positive' or 'negative'. ​We want to show how diverse accounts can be, and avoid generalizations as we understand how complex individualities are. This is why the concept of intersectionality means so much to us.We are trying to be the most aware of it as possible and to represent truthfully all these stories. Still the sample remain limited to people that accepted to talk to us and people we could reach.
