IntroductionThis film-based project was an attempt to unearth the role that food plays in processes of integration and identity-building for first and second generation southeast Asian migrants in Taiwan. We interviewed a Vietnamese food vendor who moved to Taiwan for marriage, and two mixed-heritage Taiwanese/Vietnamese students whose own mothers came for the same reason. Võ, owner of Vịt Đẹt restaurant in Rahoe night market, overcame her homesickness for Vietnam through FaceTime and home cuisine - while the two young women have a more ambivalent relationship with their identities. |
