Identity and Placemaking in Little Manila

IntroductionThis Sunday afternoon tour seeks to provide visitors with a greater understanding of the connection between Filipino migrants and Little Manila in Taipei by exploring facets of community, identity, and belonging. Through a focus on the centralization of religion, the importance of food, and the feature of many different voices within the community, this tour paints a picture of migrant life in Taipei, with the hope of breaking down barriers between individuals and fostering greater mutual understanding. The tour hopes to show how the stores, parks, churches, and restaurants in Little Manila provide evidence for Filipino migrant placemaking in Taipei, especially through the adaptation of Filipino cultural elements to the migrant lifestyle in Taiwan. Through the tour, we also hope to provide guests with an opportunity to interact with the community directly, for example through trying traditional foods or clothing. The exhibition will include:
